About us

The Sunny Corner Toy Library (SCTL) is managed by a committee with a majority of members with positions that have a degree of responsibility in the community.

The every day running of the toy library is carried out by its coordinator and a group of warm-hearted volunteers who receive no payment but the smiles of your children. Please, treat them with respect and appreciation.

Please consider volunteering, either by joining the committee and/or sharing your time and skills (e.g. mending toys and bikes, sewing, computer skills, carpentry). All help is greatly appreciated!

Services

SCTL promotes the mental and physical development and learning of children through “hands on” educational and fun play experiences. We have more than three thousand items for you to borrow for your family. We render services to pre-school children who are NSW residents, temporary visa or visitors with small children, community and religious groups, playgroup, students on early childhood related ocupations, teachers, therapists, grandparents and carers. All nationalities and religions are welcomed.

We have a good range of educational toys for babies and toddlers, as well as, cars and train sets, puzzles, building and construction sets, costumes, role playing toys, ride-ons, tricycles, training bikes, climb and slide and other outdoor toys, family games, music and audio resources, pre-school activities and interactive toys, first notions of literacy and numeracy, science and technologies (STEM). In addition, SCTL has a good selection of parents resources to assist you in your priceless task. When budget permits our volunteers may run:

  • Stay and Play activities for pre-schoolers to develop their cognitive, language, social and emotional, self-help and physical skills (fine motor, gross motor)
  • Parents Workshops to assist children's typical development and with additional support needs
  • Children Workshops that supports a child's school readiness
  • Christmas Parties and/or other free events for the community

Join

You simply need to complete an application form, present a valid identification (e.g. driving license, Medicare card, passport), a proof of current address (e.g. lease agreement) and bring cash for subscription, donations or other fees. You do not have to live in the Auburn area to be a member. Unfortunately, SCTL needs to charge a small annual subscription and other fees in order to keep its doors open.

Your membership entitles you to borrow up to six items every two weeks. Conditions of membership are that children must be under parental supervision at all times, members (adults, children) must be courteous and polite and to treat our volunteers with respect. Otherwise you may be removed and your membership cancelled.

Volunteering

Please approach us during business hours and talk with our coordinator. You may also email at coordinator@sunnycornertoylibrary.org.au.

We welcome assistance with customer service and a varied array of light tasks concerning the everyday running and promotion of SCTL (e.g. sorting and counting toys, barcoding and labelling to sewing costumes and bags, repairing bikes and making toys from scratch). You will find this a most fulfilling experience if you enjoy children and treasure the cultural diversity of the Auburn-Lidcombe area.

Volunteers must be willing to undertake Working with Children Check.

For the sake of all the children health we ask our members to wipe toys clean with an antibacterial solution before returning. Some washable toys may require soaking with Napisan or similar product. Eucalyptus oil is a great degreaser, stain remover and disinfectant.

Avoid exposing toys to direct sunlight for long periods of time and the elements (colours fade, plastic gets brittle, wood swells with water, metal gets hot). Your children may be hurt. Damaged goods must be paid in full as new as per market value.

Please supervise children whilst they play with the toys. Toys are less likely to be damaged or pieces lost if you set aside a “Special Play Time” with your children. Please discuss with the coordinator if a toy is accidentally damaged. A replacement cost might be incurred should the toy be beyond repair.

If for any reason a member is not able to return the toys by the due date, he/she may phone and get an extension, usually of one extra week. On the contrary a $10.00 fine will be charged for each extra overdue week.
